Twenty-Six
There was a second when I woke up and I wasnât suffocated by terror. That was a nice second.
I tried to sit up and succeeded on the second attempt. My head hurt, but I ignored the pain. It was easy because my back and leg hurt more.
I was on a cot in my room at the safe house. Instead of Hecate sitting on the one chair, Grifter was there, leaning it on the back two legs, balanced with his back to the wall and a foot on my bed.
âSleeping Beauty is awake!â Grifter yelled to the common room. He didnât have his gun trained on me, but he had a pistol in his lap.
He noticed me looking at the gun and gave me a little wink.
Angel stomped in, slamming the door that was already half open, all the way open.
She was dressed in a gray pantsuit. âWhat the hell are you playing at?â she spat.
I blinked and looked at my watch. That couldn't be right. It was Thursday? I blinked again. Well, it was technically Thursday. Just by an hour. But that meant I had been out forâ¦
âYouâve been lights out for an entire day, mate,â Grifter said. âIn fact, how many fingers am I holding up?â He held up one finger.
I returned the same finger.
He laughed.
âAnswer me! What happened?â Angel demanded.
So, theyâd had an entire day to kill me. If they knew Iâd turned on Hecate, they wouldnât be asking me questions. âAsk Hecate or Timothy.â
I tried to rub out the pain in my back, playing for time. What was going on here? How did I get back here, of all places? Was I dead and this was Hell? I looked around for Raven. If he was standing in the corner, then I would know it was Hell.
âSheâs gone, mate.â With his non-gun hand he made a poofing gesture with his fingers and lips. âLeft us a note, though.â
âWhat? The kids got away?â I tried to sound casual and not hopeful.
Angelâs eyes narrowed. âWhat do you know about the kids?â
There was only one way out of this. Well, two. I could try and rush them, but I wasnât sure I could rely on my body to do what I needed it to do. Or I could try to talk my way out.
âJust what Hecate said.â I shrugged. âI think she really wanted Hammer. To read his mind, figure out where all the Railroad kids were being kept.â
Angel didnât say anything. Neither did Grifter. So they werenât surprised and they were okay with it. They were totally okay with mind boiling and paraslaving.
I wasnât running anymore. These guys were going down. Even if I had to spend the rest of my life in SSA custody, too, these guys were going down.
It was like Grifter could read my mind. His gun twitched and the barrel pointed directly at me.
âWhy were you there?â Angel spat.
âI donât know.â I threw my hands up and let them drop. âYou said to do whatever Hecate told me to do.
